People out there may not even know it exists and when they do they all think it’s all about ‘dancing with a ribbon’ or ‘being a contortionist’. That’s absurd. Let me say a few things about this lovely sport, my personal opinion:
1. Rhythmic Gymnastics is one of the hardest sports in this world. It takes time, discipline, will, passion, sacrifices, a lot of training, love, disposal and many other skills and qualities to make someone a gymnast.
2. It makes me sick everytime I hear people saying a gymnast is better than other just because she’s more flexible. I hate to disappoint people, buy, hey you, RG is NOT about flexibility only! It’s such an important part of it but not the whole thing! If Rhythmics was just about it, then it would be called contortionism.
3. If only people knew how difficult it is… You just don’t go there and perform. Do you know how hard it is to make a single pivot? Or a simple 3 seconds balance? Or doing fabulous leaps that may look easy but you have no idea of how much time of practicing there is behind that single leap.
4. What about the psychological part? The stress, the anxiety, the fear, the emotional pain, the difficulties on dealing with competitions and cups and, especially, with unfair scores. So much sweat to take a gymnast there to do her best and maybe to end up failing… You can’t even imagine how much it hurts
5. Physical pain. If you’re not a dancer or a gymnast and think it’s not this hard, sit on the floor right now, straight legs, and try to touch your feet or go a little further. Many gymnasts started just like this, without even touching their feet with their hands so just try to imagine all the pain they felt to took them where they are now (and still feel to improve). And yes, there are many gymnasts that are naturally flexible but it doesn’t mean it doesn’t hurt when they train to get even better and go beyong their limits. Enough said.
Feel free to add your own points, I’d love to read ‘em all.
Rhythmic gymnastics is a sport where people only see a bright artwork and often think that it’s all easy.
